DECHRON™ Steel-base furniture glides tend to be more expensive than their nylon-base counterparts but offer a key advantage: they are less likely to cause permanent damage on poorly maintained floors. Unlike softer materials, the hard steel base resists embedding dirt and grit, which can otherwise lead to scratching and wear—an issue more common with nylon glides. However, steel bases can leave unsightly black streaks on waxed VCT tile floors, which many find undesirable. These marks can typically be removed by stripping and re-waxing the floor, though this is a time-consuming and costly maintenance task. Additionally, steel bases are prone to rust if exposed to moisture over extended periods. For this reason, some schools avoid using them on carpeted areas that are regularly cleaned, especially when furniture may be returned to damp flooring shortly after cleaning.
