Red Sucker Lake School Project
Project Highlight: Red Sucker Lake School
Red Sucker Lake First Nation is an Oji-Cree community located on a scenic peninsula along the northeast shore of Red Sucker Lake, Manitoba, near the Ontario border. Surrounded by rich forests within the Precambrian Shield, the community’s setting played a key role in shaping the vision for this project.
This initiative involved a major addition (3,212 m² new construction) and renovation to the existing school (2,190 m²), transforming it into a comprehensive K–12 education facility. The renovated portion now accommodates elementary students, while the new expansion provides modern learning spaces for grades 7–12.
Developed through community consultation, the new high school design celebrates local culture and spirituality. At the heart of the school is a striking traditional tipi structure that houses the library - serving as a central gathering point and visual anchor upon entry. The library’s open design features floor-to-ceiling glazing for clear sightlines and clerestory windows that fill the space with natural light. Surrounding the library are key functional areas including administration, computer lab, native language classroom, gymnasium, and cafeteria. The cafeteria, open to the main lobby, offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape and creates a vibrant social hub that supports 21st-century learning and collaboration.
The new elementary wing introduces a dedicated kindergarten, additional classrooms, and a cafeteria, along with an upgraded library, accessible ramp, and refreshed gymnasium. A landscape mural by a renowned local artist enriches the interior environment, highlighting the community’s deep connection to nature and its wildlife.
Spaces Inc. proudly provided all classroom, learning commons, and administrative furnishings for this transformative project.
